25 Questions with the Horse Boyfriend

Those of you who have followed me for a while have probably seen me talk about my boyfriend Zach at one time or another. I would describe Zach as the Ultimate Horse Boyfriend. (We need to make him a trophy or something, frfr.) He and I took a trip to Tryon International last weekend, which sparked this post. We went by ourselves, of course West and Wells came, but that meant that we were solo all weekend in caring for West. He was so good. Cleaning West’s stall without being asked, rinsing buckets, filling hay bags, hooking/unhooking my trailer, running around with tack, nightcheck, the whole nine yards.

Zach has been doing this for two years now, but I think after last weekend… he’s definitely earned his stripes. I asked my followers to send in any and all questions they had for the “horse girl boyfriend,” and I’ve chosen 25 of my favorites!

  1. Have you previously worked with horses? “ I’ve worked with a few horses before I met Emily, but mostly cattle. There are a lot of similarities between the two, but they’re also very very different.”
  2. How much are you into horses? Do you enjoy being around them? “I think horses are pretty cool to watch, especially while they’re in the arena. Emily and I went to the Grand Prix last year at TIEC ( my first one ) and I think that really made me enjoy it a lot more than I used to.
  3. Do you like West? Do the two of you get along? “I love West. We get along just fine, but he only really likes me when I have treats.”
  4. If you could change one thing about West, what would it be? “If I could change something about west, it would be his belly. It’s huge! He needs to go on Jenny Craig.”
  5. How do you feel about the horse always coming first? “The horse coming first doesn’t bother me any more. I had to get used to it at first, and it took me a few months. It really doesn’t change mine and Emily’s relationship. I kind of like the peace and quiet since she’s at the barn the majority of the time.”
  6. Do you feel jealous that your girlfriend loves her horse more than you? “I don’t feel jealous at all, it keeps the attention off of me. “
  7. What do you do when she spends more time at the barn than with you? “I work a lot, sometimes seven days a week. If I’m not there while she’s at the barn, I like to train our dog or take her quail hunting. I’m a big outdoors guy.”
  8. What’s the worst part about being a horsey boyfriend? “ The worst part is the midnight checkups when he’s showing. I go to sleep early. Being woken up at midnight and forced to go out to the barns is *thumbs down* ”
  9. How do you handle horse people? “I feel like I deal with horse people pretty well. Almost everyone I’ve met has always been extremely nice. I’m sure there are some out there that aren’t, I just haven’t come across any yet. “
  10. My bf does NOT like coming to the barn, even to watch. Any tips to help him enjoy it more? “I don’t have any tips on that. Just don’t give him an option.  Demand he comes and make him take photos.”
  11. What do you think is the funniest thing that horse riders do? One of the funniest things to me is seeing grown men in tight breeches and tall boots. I still can’t get over it. I probably shouldn’t elaborate any more on this one.”
  12. What’s it like watching Emily ride? “I usually watch Emily ride from behind the camera lens. *eye roll* ”
  13. Do you go to all of her shows? “I try to get to most of her shows. The only ones that I miss are the ones on the week days.”
  14. What is your #1 horse show must have item? “Beer.”
  15. What’s the coolest place you’ve travelled to in your capacity as “horse boyfriend?” “I’ve travelled to quite a few places with Emily and West. Tryon is by far my favorite because there’s also things there that I can do. We are heading down to Wellington in April and I’m looking forward to it. I also like Chatt Hills a lot. Georgia International Horse Park sucks. We’re never going back there again. “
  16. When y’all travel, does she make you do all the dirty work? How much does she slave you? “She pulls the trailer, and the rest is usually me. I do the dirty work, but that’s just so she doesn’t have to. Emily doesn’t ‘slave me’ really, I usually volunteer myself just to help out with things if she’s really busy or stressed.”
  17. Have you ever ridden West? “I’ve ridden west twice. This past weekend was actually the second time. Alcohol was involved.”
  18. Will you ever get your own horse so you can ride with Emily and West? “I say I wont get a horse of my own, but knowing Emily .. I will come home to a horse one day after work. I do really want a mini though.”
  19. If you did get a horse, what breed would it be and what discipline would you do? “I would get a quarter horse. I would do ranch type things with it. I wouldn’t compete, but it would know how to rope and herd. It would actually do useful things.”
  20. Coolest thing you’ve ever seen Emily do with a horse? “The coolest thing that I’ve seen Emily and West do has been their transition between show jumping and dressage. They way that they are progressing in a new style is impressive.”
  21. Does she talk about horses 24/7? “She really doesn’t talk horse all the time, but she can if you let her. ;)”
  22. Is Emily a psycho horse mom? “She isn’t all the time, but when she is – everyone better watch out. “
  23. What’s the most expensive thing you’ll get Emily before saying “too much?” “I don’t know what the most expensive thing would be. I’ve said no to a lot of things already, but somehow she always ends up with what she wants. For example : the Voltaire she sits in every day. *eye roll*”
  24. If you had to tack West up for Emily, could you do it? “I think I could.. it just wouldn’t be up to her standards. She’d have to take it all off and start over again.”
  25. What’s the best part about being a horse girl boyfriend? “The best part about being a horse boyfriend is all of the traveling, and seeing her do what makes her happy. I love watching them grow.”
