Happy Halloween! I hope you have a bucket of candy ready for your dog! Just kidding! Candy isn’t safe for your precious pooch! I have a great alternative for you though – Ziwi Good Dog Rewards, for your GREAT dog!
First, we must back track. Have you heard of Ziwi? Ziwi Peak is a family owned, premium pet food company, based out of New Zealand. They offer full lines of dry food, wet food, and treats for dogs and cats, all sourced directly from their home country.
Straight from Ziwi, their mission statement is .. ” Our Ziwi story starts in the green, free-range farms and blue, pristine Southern oceans of New Zealand. Our home place has a warm, temperate climate, which allows us to use only animals that are free-ranging, and grass-fed, all year round. We want this beautiful corner of the world preserved for the future, that’s why we choose to only source from sustainably and humanely managed local farms. What does this mean for your pet? It means the cleanest, purest, most natural ingredients in the world, benefiting your pet for a long, happy, healthy life. “
In all Ziwi Peak dry products, you will find 96% fresh meat, organ, bones, and seafood, and the remaining 4% is made up of vitamins, minerals, and other superfoods. Just the way nature intended. They include Green-Lipped Mussel, a natural source of Glucosamine and Chondroitin, in all of their recipes which nutritionally supports long-term joint health. Ziwi also includes Green Tripe as a natural super-food to assist gut health and digestion.
Ziwi believes that dogs and cats are carnivores that thrive on meat – not allergy inducing, low cost fillers such as grains, corns, potatoes, wheat, and rice. If you’re worried about the DCM problem floating around, you’re safe with Ziwi! Ziwi Peak does not include any peas, lentils, legumes, or any other low cost fillers in their foods or treats – which result in poor heart health, and can ultimately lead to DCM.
So, if you aren’t hooked already, run to your closest pet store ( my local Pet Supplies Plus carries Ziwi ) and grab a bag of Good Dog Rewards as a Halloween treat for your dog! Your dog will love you for it! Not only are they a great treat, they’re healthy and actually beneficial for your dog.
I’m going to let you in on a little secret … the Good Dog Rewards are actually the same formulas as Ziwi’s Air Dried food, just made in smaller batches. Why air dried though?
Air-drying is a method that has been used for centuries to naturally preserve meats. Ziwi’s modern method stays true to this artisan approach. Their slow and gentle twin stage air-drying process crafts a food that is as nutrient dense and digestible as a completely raw diet. The twin stage process also eliminates all pathogenic bacteria, such as E.coli, salmonella and listeria, while protecting the natural nutrition of our ingredients. The air-drying process provides a 21-month shelf life, naturally, without the need for artificial preservatives, sugars or glycerines. Huge!! The end result is a food that is as nutrient dense and digestible as a completely raw diet, but safe and clean to handle.
If you’ve used other pre-made raw food or treats on the market, you know the bag comes with one million warnings. Must wash hands immediately!! Must disinfect bowls!! Don’t let your dog lick you after eating!! All of those worries are gone with Ziwi Good Dog Rewards, which are completely safe to handle.
Above is a graphic listing the ingredients in the Ziwi Good Dog Rewards, Lamb flavor. I labeled the first ingredient as “high-quality protein” because there was just too much lamb to list on the graphic. The ingredient list starts out as …. Lamb, Lamb Heart, Lamb Tripe, Lamb Liver, Lamb Kidney, Lamb Lung, New Zealand Green Mussel, Lamb Bone. That’s a lot of lamb, and now you understand why 96% of the product is meat, organ, and New Zealand Green Mussel (also a meat.)
The air dried treats are thin, and the perfect mix between soft and crunchy. I find that because of their size, shape, and easy ability to break into smaller pieces, they make the perfect training treat! Healthy treats are getting harder and harder to find, especially with all the DCM findings lately.
It makes me feel good that the treats I’m feeding are essentially raw food, and gives me peace of mind that I’m not doing anything to interfere with or harm my dog’s diet. As someone who uses a lot of training treats, this makes me happy!
Because these treats are essentially dog food, be careful about calories! Especially in puppies, seniors, or dogs that are already overweight. However much Ziwi you feed your dog as treats, subtract that amount from their usual daily kibble. Nobody likes a fat dog!
Overall, these treats get a 10/10 from me – and my dogs! First and foremost, they’re about as healthy as it comes, and I feel good about using Ziwi to train my dogs. Second, they’re reasonably priced. One bag of the Lamb Good Dog Rewards is $8-9, depending on where you buy it. Third, and just as important – my dogs love them. I’ve never had a dog say no to Ziwi, and I doubt I ever will!
The Good Dog Rewards come in three flavors – Lamb, (Ward’s favorite) Beef, and Venison. Like I said earlier, my local Pet Supplies Plus carries them, as does Chewy and Amazon. They’re also available straight from the Ziwi Peak website.
As always, if you purchase a product that I’ve reviewed or recommended, I’d love to hear from you! Tell me how you like it!
